“Kathmandu: A City of Culture, Learning, and Opportunities”
Located in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, Sphere Institute of Technology offers students the perfect blend of tradition and modernity. As a cultural and economic hub, Kathmandu provides a unique environment for students pursuing careers in Hospitality and Tourism. Here’s why Kathmandu is more than just a city—it’s a living classroom for our students.
Kathmandu, once a vast lake, was transformed into a fertile valley by Buddhist saint Maha Manjushree. Over time, it became a trade hub and a center for civilization. The iconic Kasthamandap, believed to be built from a single tree, inspired the city’s name. Kathmandu is also called Kantipur, meaning the abode of Goddess Laxmi.
As Nepal’s largest metropolitan city, Kathmandu is surrounded by Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Chandragiri, and Nagarjun mountains, with major rivers like Bagmati and Bishnumati flowing through it. The valley’s history began with the Gopal dynasty, followed by Mahispal, Kirants, Lichhivis (considered the golden age), and the Mallas, who enriched the city’s art and architecture.
The city is famous for its cultural diversity, festivals, and religious harmony, celebrating over 133 festivals annually, including Dashain, Tihar, Indra Jatra, Eid, and Christmas. Its rich cuisine includes Nepali staples like Dal-Bhat-Tarkari, Newari delicacies, and international cuisines.
Tourism is vital to Kathmandu’s economy, with the city offering diverse accommodations from budget lodgings to luxury hotels. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu blends tradition and modernity, making it a dream destination. Visitors are welcomed with a heartfelt “Namaste” – a salute to the divine within.
